One of my many great grandfathers was wounded in that battle, he was a Flag Bearer out of Twiggs County. I'll have to look up the detailed information if anyone is interested. His flag was captured, he spent many years after the war tracking it down, and it now resides under the gold dome in ATL in a case. I have his old Damascus parker double barrel hanging proudly at home.




That is a treasure to be held in the highest regards and the memory and story saved.

Here's a snip about him. My grandmother had his sword and service gun, unfortunately someone broke into her house many years ago and took them. From what I hear and have been told, he was a good man, a Doctor for the community he lived in, and as mentioned - tracked down the flag that was captured. My family has the letters that he wrote in the quest to find it, which is now in a case the the Hall of Valor in the GA capital.

G, 48th Regt. Ga. Inf., in exchange for James
Kennington, June 7, 1862. Appointed 4th Sergeant
Apr. 23, 1863; Ensign May 10, 1863. Wounded at
Gettysburg, Pa. July 2, 1863; Spotsylvania, Va. May
12, 1864. Appointed Sergeant Major Aug. 16, 1864.
Captured at Petersburg, Va. Apr. 3, 1865. Released
at Point Lookout, Md. June 11, 1865. (Born in Ga. in
1844. Died in Wilkinson County, Ga. Aug. 17, 1927.)
