Three dollar increase in one week

The local place here has good ribeyes for a reasonable (in today’s inflated market) price. Last week they were $13.99/#, this week they jumped to $16.99/#. How can something increase that much in a week?

In the 90’s, I could get handcut ribeyes for $6.99/# and that’s usually what we had on Saturday nights. My daughter’s best friend would often call and ask my daughter if we were having steaks and practically invite herself over, which was fine. She said she enjoyed eating with us because we talked and laughed, apparently she didn’t have that at home. Toss another steak on the grill and Beth was always welcome. As prices started going up, I remember telling the butcher that if prices hit ten dollars per pound, I wouldn’t pay it. Now ribeyes for $10/# would be quite a bargain. Heck, Publix gets $7/# for ground beef.

They ribeye were $16.49 a pound at Wal mart this morning. Our local meat center often has the bone in ribeye for $9.99 lb. on sale, regular $12.99.

One dollar in 1994 is equivalent to $2.10 in 2024, with an annual average inflation rate of 2.51%. So your $6.99/lb ribeye in 1994 would cost $14.68 in today's dollars.

In the real world, your 2018 $1 is now worth $2. That’s the problem.

In the 90s was your income the same as it is now? Just curious. The steaks were 50% less in the '90s. You have to make him a bit more money now 30 years later or you are retired.

I do think food prices are ridiculous now however. I don't think people's incomes have matched the inflation.

Aint it fun? The games they play with inflation? Like its just some naturally occuring phenomenon. Like the weather or something.

Just saw cut ribeye at Kroger for $7.99/#.

I bought 4 whole strip loins for $5.99/# last week which produced 24 1 1/4” NY strips. Plus I got some nice fat trimmings for ground venison this fall.

I don’t know what to tell ya. Other than steaks don’t always cost $12-$14/#.

Picked up some Bogo pork butts at the same time.

Shouldn’t that be the other way around?

I could have stated it better. I just meant a dollar in 2018 easily enjoys double the value of the 2024 model in most items I purchase.

My neighbor went to bait store at Sinclair put bucket on counter and got 3 dozen medium minnows and it was over $50.00 including tax .
$50 for minnows? Dang, my mama, who loved to catch crappie and always used minnows, would have a stroke.

Publix sometimes puts them on sale but they’re hit or miss on quality. They can be very good or they can be tough.

Hope it was a nice bucket! But to share a similar experience, stopped at gas station in NE AL last week, and it is old school hasn't changed in 50 yrs outside some relatively "modern" pumps and American owned. My truck was on "E", so filled it up and got two cartons of red wigglers and two of the little ketchup containers of meal worms. Total was $88.................. roughly $65 in gas. Might have to start digging my own worms. His crappie minnows are $2.50 per dozen.
