I always wondered what caused this. Worms or disease ? I see them alot in a certain area of woods, no houses close by, no fields and their mostly on the ridge so no run off. I seem to mostly see them on Hickory , both slick and shag bark, and a few oak trees. Anyone able to enlighten me ? Thanks
Do a look up on burl, very interesting grain patterns. They work well for bowls as they are pretty and the odd grain does not split or check out as badly as a straighter one will.
I'll check that out. I've always thought burls grew on the main trunk. When I find these there are always several on the same tree, and most seem to hang down. Thanks.
