I got this from the Virginia State Police website...am I reading this right? On 1 July 2016 VA will honor other states concealed carry permits? I went to GA Carry but didn't see anything about it.

http://www.vsp.virginia.gov/Firearms_Reciprocity.shtm

----------------------------
EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2016

The holder of a valid concealed handgun or concealed weapon permit or
license issued by another state may carry a concealed handgun in Virginia
provided:
.the holder of such permit or license is at least 21 years of age; and
.the permit or license holder carries a photo identification issued by a
government agency of any state or by the U.S. Department of Defense or U.S.
Department of State; and
.the holder displays the permit or license and such identification upon
demand by a law-enforcement officer; and
.the permit or license holder has not previously had a Virginia concealed
handgun permit revoked.

The legislation also provides that the Virginia State Police in conjunction
with the Office of the Attorney General will work with the various
jurisdictions to secure reciprocal privileges for Virginia citizens desiring
to carry concealed in other states.

Although the new law will require Virginia to grant recognition to all
states that issue permits, those states may not authorize Virginia permit
holders to possess a firearm in their state. You will need to contact each
state to determine if they will recognize your Virginia permit.

This is where I would raise a question. There has to be reasonable cause or suspicion, or you would have to be detained, for them to be able to approach and ask for such documentation. But as long as you have it, and they ask and you show them, shouldnt be an issue. Its the idjits on youtube posting videos of themselves bucking on the cops and not showing their applicable permits all the while constantly stating "Am I being detained?" that paint the CWL holders in a bad light.

Actually, most states (including NC and SC,) require you to immediately inform any LEO that approaches you that you have a CCP and are carrying a firearm, before they ask. Georgia is one of the few that doesn't.

I guess this didn't pop up on anybody's scope. I'm particularly interested because I was born and raised in VA and still have a lot of family there, so I travel there quite often. It would be really nice if our GA permit was good there also. And South Carolina!!

As I recall GA honors any states permit that honors the GA permit.

SO if indeed VA will honor the GA permit I do believe GA will honor the VA permit.

This is good to know cause i never had the nerve to test the open carry law when there. VA has an open carry law that does not require a permit. So even before that date, as long as you carried open you were legal.

Virginia passed a broader (than it had been) reciprocity law in the form of SB 764 (identical to HB 1163).
Here's the full text of it.

** EDITED ****
Since our GA reciprocity law is automatic and requires no formal agreement or other documentation by the AG's offices of either state, the AG of VA should not have to make any such "agreement" with GA, and therefore our lack of 24-hour verification of GWL validity, our lack of mandatory training, or any other possible objection, should be meaningless. The AG of VA does not have any say about reciprocity when it is automatic by operation of law like this.
