What happens to buckwheat wheat.....

my buckwheat is 8 weeks old and full of seeds. Obviously I know the seeds fall and possibly regrow new plants, which is fine.
But what happens to the original plant after seeds drop?

Not sure how long the mother plant lasts after making grain or seed heads but the new plants from the seed drop will be up in no time if you get some rain.

The plant dies, but you can till it a little and the seed with grow a second crop.
