When fresh they mound it up like a ant/termite/burrowing wasp.

Never to my knowledge lol. Thats right below the trail. Water is probably 6-8 feet below that.

In that case, I would guess a ground hornet or rat.

If it’s soft soil Cicada Killer Wasp will make holes like that and fill em up with Cicadas for their babies to snack on.

I had one of those make a hole literally under the front step of my shop. Pretty cool to watch.
