saw some fields of alfalfa in butts co. that look real good. anyone know how late it can be planted? my soil will support it and i think it is good food. any ideas ?
It is great deer food, but seems to be a huge amount of trouble to keep going in our climate. Our land owner has been trying for 3 years to get a good pasture of it and just cant seem to get it right. When it is going strong it is just that...strong!, but man he works at it very hard.
If you are intending it solely for wildlife feed I think you are looking in the wrong direction. Alfalfa is one of the highest maintenance plantings around. It is difficult to establish and requires constant spraying, mowing, and fertilizing to keep a pure stand going. Cost wise and maintenance wise it is a poor choice for a wildlife food plot unless you have the time to keep it up. Yep, it is terrific for deer nutrition and they love it but unless you have the capability and determination to keep it maintained property I wouldn't go there.
