Good eye packrat, according to the Orange Beach museum that's what it was used for in the back country:D

i'v come across a few of those in 25+ years of surveying/aerial mapping,i found one along the flint river just south of the boyscout camp some years ago that had that very setup ,stump from that still would make you go blind notice the weld or solder if thats lead thats bad news
