Ya'll that fly out of state, is checking your shotgun considered checked baggage? Do you take a loaded vest with all things that you take local, or downsize? It seems one could get a somwhat reasonable flight, then all the fees run it up to outrageous!

Yes they will charge you at Delta as a checked bag. There's a weight limit on the shells which equals out to approx 2 boxes. It's rather easy to check in your gun though. Just tell them at the outside check in that you want to check a gun. It has to be in a hard LOCKED case. I can't remember exactly, I think it was somewhere around 25-30 for the gun but then you've got to pay another 25-30 bucks for your suit case also..Sooo yea it cast 50-60 on top of the ticket price.

Brother came down and deer hunted with me last fall. $25 for the gun as check luggage on Airtran. At Hartsfield the agent checks you in then sends you over to security located just in front of the first class TSA screeening area. They look at the gun then you can lock it up.

I thought you didnt have to pay Delta if it was not over a certain # of Lbs. But it has been two years since I flew on a hunt.

The shells do not need to be in the gun case. Make dang sure there is not a shell in a carry on bag accidently, my camera man learned that the hard way. He got escorted off the line and got his own private search!

I always say " I would like to check a firearm, please." They look at you like you are a rag head fixn to kill someone if you say the G word.

Do not use TSA locks. Allways have your ammo in seperate checked bag in factory approved box. They will bust you for loose ammo or ammo in a vest. I travel light and generally don'e take a vest. I carry my calls in carry-on bag. Another bit of advice, if at all posible, try to fly direct or at least minimize your connections. There will be less chance of lost bag or gun. It scks when you arrive for a three day hunt and you don't have a gun for the first day and a half.
