Rotating a picture question

I have a new Panasonic Lumix and just took my first pictures with it. 98% of them were taken horizontally on the automatic setting. When I downloaded the pics a number of them were oriented incorrectly so I had to rotate them, which gave them a distorted look. They looked fine quality wise before rotating.

What do I do and is there anything I can do myself or via camera settings before I take the picture so it doesn't have to be rotated?

I admit I'm pretty camera illiterate! ;)

Thanks!

What program are you viewing them in? Is it the software w/ your camera or is it in windows?
