We'd casually attach a trail of those husks on ourselves from bottom pant leg to shirt neck. Looked like a trail of them .I remember back in the mid to late 90s in Lawrenceville a massive brood hatched.
I had no idea what they were, but the shells they left behind on the 3 pine trees in my front yard was covered so thick you couldn't see the bark.

I seen a video of a guy coating them in olive oil and salt and cooking them in a air Fryer , said they were better than popcorn shrimpLol. Neat huh?
