As summer unfolds here on Crooked Creek the conditions can often get hot and stuffy. The Yellow Flies begin to swarm, and the water and air can often feel warm and thick. But (change of direction) occasionally a cool and refreshing breeze can blow and everyone along the banks can be renewed and encouraged. Such was the case this morning aboard my beloved 17 ft canoe that I call the Carp Shark.
Once you pass the last house on our stretch up the creek the scenery and sounds begin to change. You rarely hear or see anything other than the birds and critters that inhabit what I feel is an almost enchanted waterway. With a little imagination, you can be anywhere you want, and the hands of time seem to roll back like the tin lid on an old Sardine can.
Although the weather was picture perfect this morning the cool and refreshing breeze came not in the barometric pressure, but it came in the form of a wonderful young man named Maddox. Maddox Hardy and his Papa Jeff were my guests today and for two hours, there we were with a couple of telescopic poles and a cup or two of worms. Maddox was polite and appreciative. He was observant and open to every question or suggestion that came his way. I’ve hosted many guests since we moved here over seven years ago but I can honestly say that Maddox Hardy is one guest that I’ll remember for many days to come.
