How many times can you tax a vehicle ....... Georgia Legislature HB386 ....
Starting March 1, 2013, all vehicles titled in the state of Georgia are subject to a new title ad valorem tax fee at the rate of 6.5 percent of the fair market in 2013. This includes casual sales and vehicles coming into the state. The new title ad valorem tax fee replaces the sales tax currently charged on the purchase of a titled vehicle. Gifts, inheritances, and transfers among family members are not exempt.
• All other fees remain the same.
• Annual registration requirements remain the same (annual emissions tests, mandatory liability insurance, identification/driver’s license requirements, and the purchase of a current year decal).
• Vehicles purchased in Georgia on or after January 1, 2012, and titled in Georgia before March 1, 2013, will have an opt-in period for the onetime title ad valorem tax fee. After March 1, 2013, these eligible vehicles may choose to pay the onetime title ad valorem tax fee OR continue paying the annual ad valorem tax. Any Georgia sales and ad valorem taxes paid on*eligible vehicles may be credited toward the onetime title ad valorem tax due for the same vehicle and same owner at the time of opt-in.
• Until the new law takes effect on March 1, 2013, ad valorem tax is due and payable. All non-titled vehicles will remain on the current annual ad valorem tax system.
