Hi bear hunters - Mange was first detected in bears in Georgia in 2021 (before that it was first detected in bears in the 1980s and then began to increase in distribution and severity in the 1990s, starting in Pennsylvania). Since then it has continued to spread. I am a researcher at the University of Georgia and I study wildlife health. We have studied the impacts of mange on black bears in the Northeast and Midwest for many years. Could you please spare a few minutes of your time to help us understand bear health (does not matter where you hunt bears). We are particularly interested in mange which impacts not only bears but also other wildlife and domestic animals. Thank you for your time! And please spread the word to fellow hunters.

Probably won't help you in any way but have had several game cam pics of bears several years ago with mange. I've seen red foxes with mange as well. Haven't seen any in the last few years with mange. I'm in Pennsylvania.

we are working with the PA Game Commission to get mange reports in PA. Would be interested to know if they were from outside the current 'known' parts - all of our data are here: https://scwds.shinyapps.io/mange/

My mange bears were in Centre County Pa. and the red foxes were in Southeastern Pa., Chester and Berks County.

Very nice. Northern Centre is where camp is, North of Beech Creek. Hunt and fish in Sproul up around 144 south of Renovo.

we have had 2 cases of sarcoptic mange and a few cases of ursicoptic mange - so luckily nothing like what has been seen in the more northern states.
