Monthly 3-D Shoot

Saturday, August 6, 2022

August is imminent and with it comes the final shoot of our 3-D season and the annual club championship! This year, we will give awards to the winning shooters in six classes, three for adults and three for younger folks. There will be a combined Men’s class (recurve and longbow), a combined Women’s class (recurve and longbow), and a Primitive class (co-ed). In addition, we’ll have our usual Youth, Junior, and Cub classes for the younger shooters. Rules for each are posted below.

As usual, we will set 20 targets in the woods at varying distances from the shooting stakes. If you are shooting in the competition, you must shoot from the stake assigned to your class. Men’s class participants will shoot from the blue stake, Women, Primitive, and Youth classes will shoot from the white stake, and Junior and Cub classes will shoot from the red stake. This is a change from our usual non-competitive monthly shoots, so please take note.

The course will be adequately marked so it will be easy to find your way around. Scoring for this event will be 10/8/5/0, as has been customary for quite a few years now.

Shoot fees – Unchanged since who knows when?
Members - $5.00 per shooter
Family of three or more - $15.00
Non-members - $10.00
Family of three or more - $25.00
Kids under 12 years of age shoot free.

First time shooters at our club usually shoot for free. However, this provision does not apply for the club championship event each year.

Lunch will be available for a $5 per person donation. Lunch will consist of a burger and a dog, a bag of chips and a drink. Extra soft drinks and water will be available for purchase at the event. The cut-off time to sign up for lunch is 10:30 a.m. Lunch will be served by 12:00 p.m.

NOTE: All attendees, whether they shoot or not, must register at the registration table upon arrival.

At the North Georgia Traditional Archery Club, we define traditional archery equipment to include longbows, recurve bows, and primitive bows.

Please, no compound bows, crossbows, or any equipment that does not fit our definition of traditional bows. Loaner bows and arrows are available for anyone who doesn’t have their own equipment.

General Rules

Scoring is 10/8/5/0. Arrow must be touching the line to receive higher score. An arrow in any part of the foam target is to be scored accordingly. Hits in the horns, hooves, or any other portion of the target not defined as scorable will be scored as a ZERO.

Field points only, no broadheads, no Judos, no blunts.

No sights of any type. No markings on riser of bow that could be used to facilitate sighting.

No stabilizers or anything remotely resembling a stabilizer.

Fingers only, either bare or with glove or tab. Mechanical release aids allowed only for those with arm/hand disability.

One finger must touch the arrow when shooting, no string walking. The only exception is if the shooter must use a release due to disability as outlined above.

Any arrow material is OK for all classes other than Primitive

*Primitive Class – Wood bow, backing OK but must be of a “natural” material (no glass), with wood, cane, or bamboo arrows, plastic nocks are OK.

Shooter must maintain contact with stake with foot or other body part through the shot. Violation means a ZERO score.

Use of binoculars is acceptable. No range finding devices are allowed.

If an arrow bounces back from the target and is witnessed by the group, it shall be the decision of the group to score the arrow as agreed upon. Glancing blows (or ricochets) off the target score a ZERO.

No arrows should be pulled from any target until all scores have been recorded.

Your first time through the course will determine your score. Shoot the course as many times as you like, but only the first time through the course will count for your score for the day.

Any ties in scoring for 1st place will be broken by sudden death shoot down, with targets selected or placed by club officers. For this tie-breaker, sudden death is defined as one arrow each until a winner is determined.

1:00 p.m. deadline to start the course if shooting for score. Score card turn in deadline is 2:30 p.m. sharp!

Courtesy, Safety, and Course Etiquette

Please keep shooting groups limited to four shooters. If you have more in your group, please start another group.

When searching for arrows that miss a target, please limit your search to not more than five minutes if another group is waiting behind you. You can always come back later and continue your search.

Please allow faster groups to “play through.” This is especially important if a group shooting for score overtakes your group which is shooting for fun only.

Please, for the sake of safety, do not nock your arrow until you have reached the shooting stake for your class and you have taken your position to shoot. Mixed groups should shoot from back to front, blue stake first, then the white stake, and finally the red stake.

Please dispose of water bottles and any other trash that you may carry onto the course in the trash bags/cans provided. Please help keep our club property clean and do not litter.

Please do not move any target or shooting stake or remove any limbs, brush or other potential obstacles from around the stake or target. Every competitor should have equal opportunity on the courses, all day long. Sometimes, this means taking an indirect path to the target to pull arrows.

Please do your best to leave all vegetation in place at shooting stakes and in shooting lanes. The shot should be the same for everyone as far as is possible, all day long.

When marking your score card, please mark each shot with the number scored for that target. Please do not mark the card with an X, a dash, or any other letter or symbol. Use a number only and write legibly.

Sounds like a blast and I’m going to try and make it.

Out of curiosity, why no string walking, or fixed crawl? I’ve never been to a competition. Is that normal to exclude that?

Yes, these have been "outlawed" in our competition for years and we really don't need to add a class to our event to accommodate such a thing...

Had a BIG day last Saturday with 84 in attendance at the last shoot of the year. 80 of those actually shot their bows.

Thanks to those who show up early month after month to help with the set up. We'd be in a bind without them. James, David, and Ted are always there and they stay until we ride away after things are put up. They help all day long with everything that needs doing and they don't have to be asked. I am grateful for each of them. Jordan also showed up early to help us this month and we appreciate him as well.

Thanks to the guys who stayed late to help with tear down and put away. And thanks to those who helped with the meal preparation. I appreciate all of you very much.

Thanks also to the folks who came to shoot with us and make all of this a reality.

Our next shoot will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2023. See y'all then if the Lord is willing.

It was a great shoot. As always friendly folks that were welcoming to me and my clan of boys. I’m going to have to get better at shooting with a monkey, I mean mini me on my back. That wiggle factor… maybe it approximates buck fever, maybe not. It sure was fun
