Downs Buck a Record: Will it last?

1/16/2013

"notified that the score on his 28-point, San Jacinto County buck has been certified by both Pope and Young and Boone and Crockett"

"It beats Thomas Friedkin’s Dimmit County deer from 2010 by nearly 24 inches."

"according to P&Y officials, the deer ranks 9th in the entire nation"

"Downs says of the long wait since the rainy morning of September 29 when the low-fenced buck he and his brother first spotted on game cameras in August made an in-person appearance 15-yards from his ground blind"

MATT WILLIAMS: One record buck

253 3/8 net score crushes P&Y Texas non-typical state record

January 21, 2013

"To get a feel for how huge the 28 pointer is, consider it beats the former state record score by nearly two feet. That's feet, not inches. The Downs buck grosses 263 1/8 and nets 253 3/8."

"Amazingly, the deer grew an incredible 118 4/8 inches of abnormal antler — 53 1/8 inches on the right side and 65 3/8 on the left. All that with no high fences involved."

"Three tines measured better than 9 inches, one better than 10 inches, one longer than 11 inches, and two over 12 inches. The inside spread credit on the rack is 19 3/8 inches."

"estimated to be 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 years old"

"The buck crushes the former P&Y state record non-typical shot in Dec. 2010 in Dimmit County by South Texas hunter Thomas Friedkin. The Friedkin buck, a 19 pointer, nets 229 6/8. Prior to Friedkin, the record belonged to Jeff Duncan of Sanger who shot a 26 pointer scoring 225 7/8 off the Hagerman Wildlife Refuge in Grayson County in 2001."

"it ranks No. 9 of all-time among non-typicals entered in the P&Y registry since the club was founded in 1957"

Muy Grande could be state Pope & Young record

10/10/2012

"The buck is described as a 28 point, non-typical with indeterminate main beams, drop tines, and points going every which way, most of which are at least 6 inches in length. He was taken on open range, in San Jacinto County."

5. Texas Topper

"The chocolate-horned giant arrowed at 15 yards from a ground blind by A.J. Downs of Conroe, Texas, shortly after dawn on opening day was a free-ranging buck. It was taken on a 12,000-acre low-fence cattle ranch in San Jacinto County that Downs and his brother have hunted for several years. "

"well above the current top Texas nontypical archery buck, which netted 229 6/8"

Dang, I was in Cleveland and Livingston, Texas during the last week of December BUT I never saw anything that looked like this monster for sure. We did see a few larger size cattle ranches along the way up from Houston up to Corrigan. Drove all the way from Houston up to Corrigan on my annual trip to put new flowers on my girlfriend's parents gravesite.

I do remember seeing a huge deer on the back of a northbound pick-up though. He did have large wide spread antlers but still nothing like this new record book buck. The one on the pick-up would have easily gone over 200 pounds and looked to be a old buck with really long ears.

Looks like they scored it as an 8 pt with a lot of trash. I don't see how they figured out what was typ and non typ.
Almost looked like the tines were picked to make it score high ? Its a beast none the less !

I wonder what the define as a low fence????

Just asking,,,

One like is found on cattle farms across this state. High enough to keep the cows in ace but low enough for deer to jump.

look like he had his professional photography crew with him.

Or the outfitter had a $200 point and shoot and run of the mill photo editing for their website and obvious publicity. Deer like this get held in a cooler for days for pictures an proof purposes.
