Trees

I got the bug on trees back in 2020 and started planting them. 2020 I planted dunstan chestnuts, sawtooth oaks, grafted female persimmons, and southern crabapple. 2021 I planted more dunstans, gobbler sawtooth oaks, and more grafted female persimmons. 2022 I planted a pile of assorted crabapples. I’ll start with the dunstan as so far they are my favorite. No nuts of course in 2020, few nuts 2021, relatively loaded last year 2022, and full bloom right now. All dunstans from chestnut hill nursery. Once the deer figured out what they were it looked like a pig pen under them this past year. Here are a few pics of some on my home place.

That gives me hope. My Dunstan's are 2 years in the ground, looked good the other day but no blooms were seen. I'm in Newnan and its low so a little cooler, maybe they will come along.

Cant get a plum, they bloom and get froze.

So far I’m disappointed in the sawtooths. They have by far out grown everything else and look great but haven’t seen a nut yet. Thinking about planting either more dunstans or dwarf chinquapin oaks between them and eventually taking them out. How long should it take to produce?Frost hasn’t affected them.

None of my “grafted female” persimmons here at my home place have ever done anything. I don’t know what to think as the ones at my other farm the same age have fruit on them this year and some younger had fruit in them last year. Here are some pics of these on the home place. I planted several more and transplanted some known native female that I’ll post next.

Here are 2 female persimmons that I marked last year. They actually had 2 or 3 persimmons on each of them. When I went to dig them up instead of a conventional root system I found out that they were “suckers” of a root system. They were basically coming off a wrist sized root that came from a larger tree that was almost 20 foot away. I went ahead and cut them out and decided to try these 2 before I attempted any more. They leafed out good and seem to be doing fine. I’m keeping them watered regularly so I guess I’ll see.

I’ll take pics of the crabapples tomorrow. None of them have even attempted to bloom yet. Southern, dolgo, callaway, chestnut, and one other variety I can’t remember. How long does it usually take them to bloom? I know I’ve seen some wild southern crabapple trees smaller than mine bloom.

I have quite a few dunstins as well. Last year was the first year of nuts on my oldest tree. If I remember right I planted it four years ago. I noticed today it’s loaded with little small burrs already. There’s a few more that’s younger that has a few burrs so maybe mine are finally starting to produce good. I’d like to find a few crab apples to try. I’ve got plenty of young persimmons that’s been producing fruit for a couple years

These persimmons have fruit on them at my other farm. The dunstans are also in full bloom. Still no blooms on the crabapples though. Clover still doing its thing.

Where did you get the crabapple trees?
Haven't seen a crabapple tree in decades.

There were a few wild trees on my Grandparents place. They are good to eat when they get ripe.

Prolly be a good thing to have a few trellises of Muscadine and Scuppernong vines.

Blueberry bushes are cheap and low maintenance too. Deer love them.

Do you have male trees around to pollinate them?
