Turtle ID

If this is a Box Turtle, it is by far the biggest one I have ever seen. Found in Cherokee County Ga. Longest measurement on shell is 14.5 inches. Pictured with a normal sized hardhat and the tile on the floor is 12in tile.

can you show some pics of the plastron (underside)..its not a box turtle it is a likely a river cooter...(Pseudemys concinna)...show the belly and it will help to confirm this...she is a big one for sure.

I've seen these things on the banks all my life and never laid hands on one. So now I know what they look like up close.

This guy was on high ground, ridge top, well away from water of any size. I suppose that is what made me think box turtle...

Learn something every day.

Females often go up on high ground well away from water to lay their eggs.
Same thing with snapping turtles.
It is quite possible that the turtle was looking for a suitable area.

After taking the turtle to the local Elementary school for "show and tell" for 5 kindergarten classes; the old girl has been safely returned to the wild.

You should have seen those kids. You would have thought I had a bucket of ice cream the way they flocked to it.

It was a big day for the kids and the cooter.
