Back in the mid 19th century the best BP being made in the US was made in Augusta, GA. The Commanding officer GW Raines brought what he had learned from the Brits. For a time the Powder Works in Augusta were the second largest in the world. The Confederacy ran short of a lot of stuff in its short life but it never ran short of powder. The black powder commercially made today (anywhere in the world) is not even close to the quality of the BP made by the UK in the 19th century. In fact, most BP makers (worldwide) of the 19th century were far better at quality powders than any made these days.
