Of course it makes sense.
Teachers compile the bottom third of ACT and SAT scores. For most of them it's probably the only job they can hold thanks to their union. I'm sure the top 40%, after working with these "non-achievers" realize :banginghe what a waste of resources government schools are and flee to the private sector where achievement is rewarded and not suppressed. :flag:

Still waiting on this piece of data. I can't wait to see the source, if there is one!

Howard - I think he's quoting Boortz on this one; that's where I heard it a few years ago.

Seems like Boortz was quoting a Harvard University study from sometime in the 90's, if memory serves. I've never seen the study myself.

You must have received a lot of :whip: while you were in school!!!

I have been teaching for eight years now. I would say that I am offended by your comments, but that kind of attitude is typical. Besides, I work day in and day out with the people to whom you refer. The overwhelming majority of them work their butts off like you wouldn't believe. Of course, you are going to have your slackers just like every other place of business.

About the SAT scores and teachers being stupid...I'll just say I didn't get accepted to study Shakespeare at Oxford University in England by being a dummy.

Woody's has quite a few members who are teachers. I have met many of them, and believe me, we are talking top shelf not "bottom third" with these fellows!

It sounds like a typical Boortz quote. OF course he has also said if you make less than 30,000 a year (or something like that), it is because you are a moron. Nice guy...

It's got nothing to do with pay.

The morons are the ones that listen to his tripe and stuff his wallet. I'll give him this, at least he's transparent.

yeah, Neal's a real sweetheart.

He never quite got it that you don't get systemic change by aggravating the ones at the bottom of the system.

Teachers aren't the problem with government-run education (most of them, anyway). The problem is the system, which every teacher I've ever spoken to hates passionately.

It's just like anything else; you turn it over to the government and it all goes to elmo.

The only real problem I've ever had with teachers is that they are the first ones to both condemn the system and then defend state-run education simultaneously. That's where the GAE and the NEA really cause trouble.

I guess the same is true for me. I did my masters degree at UGA in 3 quarters (55 hours) and it was free. I received the Churchill Scholarship.

I guess that makes me a failure.

This is my 23rd year as a high school teacher. I have 7 more before I will be retired from education. I enjoy working with most of the students. Kinda like the mods on here. The rules will be pushed and bent but when the line is crossed it will be dealt with. It amuses me as to how many people get on here and talk about how bad the education system is.

Thanks to all that defended teachers. I have been a high school teacher for 25 years and yes in 5 years I will retire. There is a large percentage of us out there that are retirement age. As for the guy that said teacher SAT and ACT scores were low, I will compare mine to his any day and I would bet a months salary that I would win. I was in the top 1% in the nation where were you?
I have taught school in the “best” Private school in Georgia and Public school as well. I am the same teacher I was in both places. It’s not the government that is the problem either. Nor is the concept of no child left behind. All you people that are giving your opinions need to do a little research before you make yourself look silly.
Answer this question. How can a teacher make a child learn? The answer is you can’t. Learning starts when you are small and I have found that the kids whose parents take an interest in what their child does, where they go and whom they hang out with will almost always do better in school than those who don’t. The problem is we have sorry parents that don’t care one bit about the children that they have bore and these kids are behind before they even start. Often times in my class I am the only male figure some of these boys have. Just today I had a kid come to me and tell me that his girlfriend was pregnant and he did not know what to do. Being a teacher is a lot more than just teaching! It is caring for the kids you teach. There is an old saying and I’m not sure how it goes but it’s something like this…Kids don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. Kids are not the problem most of the time it’s the parents back home. I’ve had kids tell me that my mom smokes pot with my step dad all the time and They tell me, Mom gave me 30 bucks and told me to get lost so she could have sex with her boyfriend. It’s not the governments fault it’s the home life most of the time. We have a lot of sorry parents out there that should never have had children in the first place.
Several of you talked about Bortz and I have heard his comments and he is a fool when it comes to education. He is a paid to stir the pot and he knows that when he talks about education that it stirs the pot! Let him get off his fat overpaid …. And spend on year in the classroom and let him improve those kids life. The fact would be they would run him out of the school because kids don’t respond to people like that. I love teaching and I love the kids I teach. I teach because its what I love to do. I have a business on the side and I make more money in one day than I do in a month of teaching but guess what I still go in every day at 6:30 and prepare to hopefully change a life for the better! Its that simple. Hey all you guys that think its an easy Job, I encourage to you go to school for 4, years then go back and get advanced degrees. I say bring it on. Hey you can have my job in another 5 years and see if you can change the world.

That was a good job Phillip.

Now Ta-ton-ka-chips, we are still waiting for that source. I personally can't wait to read it!

Ya'll are funny. You gripe and moan about the .gov taking over this and taxing you too much to pay for that. "Government should be small" you say. "We should be free to live our own lives without .gov interference" I hear on so many posts.

Then you turn around and think government controlled schools are the answer, and wonder why our society is quickly becoming a socialist one when the government is the one deciding what your children learn everyday. Government is a disease masquerading as it's own cure, and .gov schools are just the needle injecting the poison.

The state budget for the department of education is (ABOUT) $5.9 billion dollars. The entire budget is (ABOUT) $16.3 billion dollars. That is IMMENSE power over a lot of people--AND THAT IS WHAT POLITICIANS WANT OVER EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US---POWER!!!

That is $670.00 in taxes PER PERSON (assuming 8.8 million population) which is about $2680 per family in taxes, total. I don't care WHERE they "say" the money comes from, it ALL comes from us either directly or indirectly.

If the state cut out .gov education, think of how much smaller a part of our lives they would be and how much less we would be taxed.

Ya'll keep thinking we are attacking the TEACHERS. WE ARE NOT!! It is the SYSTEM--get it through your heads. I am quite sure the GOOD teachers now would easily get jobs teaching in private schools--and most likely getting paid more $$$ than now. Think that's **?? How much does a government job pay compared to a similar private one? Most if not all of the time the public sector makes more $$$
