Main things I've seen about the pine is that it rots faster. I would be afraid of sweet gums. Their like crepe myrtles if you bury fresh cut limbs they will grow.

The center of the pines will most likely turn into lighter and not rot. The sweet gum will not root buried like that and those soft white woods will rot a lot quicker than you’d imagine. Just something to consider if you or others do this again.
I’ve got a couple of sweet gum to cut down and may start a couple of beds myself.
