Went after a bird that beat me a few times, went way out on a point at daylight. It looked like a delay before the rain hit. But about 6:30am the bottom absolutely fell out on us, 800yds from the truck. 6:40-6:45 a huge lighting flash followed by thunder hit. I heard a bird gobble to our right I thought it was 300yds or so. We moved towards him and set up, so we could see a firebreak that he had previously beat me on. It got lighter and lighter, I told my brother he might not gobble again due to it was pouring rain at this point. Another roll of thunder bird gobbled too our left way off. Birds we were on were mute, I pulled out a Permar .45 trumpet and gave some tree calls to silence. Waited 15/20, then did a Loud ground sequence, to silence. About 10/15mins later, my bro saw a turkey in the ditch adjacent to our firebreak. He was using my 20ga and was zooming in and out on the Leupold to shake the water, it was rough. I leaned out and broadcasted 3 loud clucks and a Yelp back up the hill into the thinned pines and went quiet. As the bird was easing along, we watched 4 hens drop off the roost and land all around it. Then the last bird was a gobbler, not sure if it was the one we heard or a different bird alltogether. I had a hen decoy set to our left incase they saw it, they would possibly pull right across my brothers strong side. The boss hen saw it and she was on the way to investigate, pulling the entire flock up into our laps. He never went to full strut, but he stayed semi strut chasing hens in circles in the pouring rain. We let him get to 35yds and my brother claimed his 2nd longbeard ever.
I’ve been blessed to enjoy a load of sunrises this spring, and witness 4 birds be taken in 4 different counties. This bird going to a taxidermist tomorrow, to see if the damage can be fixed for a full body mount. This hunt only lasted about 4mins, but it was a blast. He’s not on the forum but wanted to share.
