Last year, I got the opportunity to take my FiL shopping for a new deer rifle after I forced him to retire his old one. I had been planning to buy a new rifle for myself specifically for this project.
The goal was to take a "budget rifle" and turn it into a compact, lightweight tool specifically for mountain hunting.
The rifle started as a standard Savage Axis XP II in .308.

As to the build itself:
-Savage Axis XP II in .308 win.
-Monstrum 1 piece picatinny scope base
-Monstrum "Pro series" 30mm rings (hand-lapped)
-barrel shortened 4" and recrowned 11deg. Recessed
-New stock, shortened 1", hand stippled grip areas and painted.
-TruGlo 1-6 x 24 IR scope.
-Beartoooth products cheek rest
-Quake Claw sling
Overall, It's now a 37.5" (2" shorter than the factory compact model) weighs right at 8 pounds all-in. Total cost out of pocket was about $550.

Looks great. I used to always lose a round or two out of my elastic ammo holder that was on the butt. Does the one that you have on yours hold the ammo pretty tight?

It holds very well. It's neoprene inside the looks and cuff so it's kinda "sticky" if that makes sense. I've only taken this rifle out a couple times, before I reworked it. I have these cuffs on multiple rifles with no issues.

Is that 8 pounds rigged like it is in the pic, with scope, sling, and ammo?
