Thin mints, Samoans, Tag along. Aww who am I kidding?Tagalongs are the bomb.
Boys should be taught to be men by their fathers, grandfathers, etc. but doesn't always happen. Had a youngun who through scouts spent a lot of time with my boys, me n Sweet Thang. Won't bore you with all the story but found out a few years after the fact that he died from an OD of herion a couple years after high school graduation. We were devestated. Kids fall through the cracks sometimes. Sorry brother. Know yours was in jest. Just hit me. He was a good kid in a bad situation.So, you're teaching boys to be men by clipping coupons? No wonder they're inclusive.
I can see that scouts could be good for city kids with clueless, uninterested or missing parents. But, if you are a parent with a kid, you should be teaching them this stuff yourself. I can teach one kid. I can teach two kids. Maybe three at one time, but that's pushing it. If you get a whole passle of kids together, such as a boy scout troop, you ain't gonna teach them a durn thing, because they're just gonna ignore you and pay attention to each other and do what they want. Every time I run into scout troops in the woods, I do not have a good impression at all. Bunch of little entitled snots feeding off each other. The scouts have long been a glorified babysitting organization for lazy parents. The scouts in the 40s and 50s were a serious organization that taught kids realistic life skills. The scouts nowadays are just another mealy-mouthed indoctrination, participation trophy, meaningless feely-good afraid of reality organization, IMO.Boys should be taught to be men by their fathers, grandfathers, etc. but doesn't always happen. Everything nowaday seems like it aint what it used to be. I imagine stuff like the boy scouts is no different. But its as good as its gonna get for some kids. Sad but true. Not everybodies parents cares nor knows how to teach.I can see that scouts could be good for city kids with clueless, uninterested or missing parents. Next time maybe try and say something to the adult leaders in a non-confrontational, adult discussion. Let them know what the boys are doing and how it is affecting you and possibly others. The Scout leaders I knew would have stopped the action and explained why that action was unacceptable, as I would have when I was one.Like the last group of them I encountered up in the Shining Rock Wilderness that were throwing rocks into the creek ahead of me while I was trying to fish, and laughing and making smart-aleck comments about it, and their "leader" didn't say anything? They came close to getting a lesson in citizenship, for sure.
I don't have any reason to interact with boyscout leaders. It's not my choice to mentor them.Next time maybe try and say something to the adult leaders in a non-confrontational, adult discussion. Not everyone has the same life experiences and as such has the same knowledge, You might have been able to educate, through the adults, a group of Scouts.
And possibly overcome post #54 in your own way.
If they actually taught and enforced those things, it would be good. They did in the 50s. Now, it's just another group of unruly kids ignoring their "leaders."I truly do not understand why on an outdoor forum there is this much dislike for Scouting. I would think getting youngsters into the outdoors would be appreciated and maybe even celebrated. Scouting is designed to teach leadership, social skills, introductory knowledge of many topics (merit badges), and a number of other things most here would think are right and appropriate.
Let's take a look at some of the things Scouting enforces...
On my honor, I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.
A Scout is:
Trustworthy
Loyal
Helpful
Friendly
Courteous
Kind
Obedient
Cheerful
Thrifty
Brave
Clean
Reverent
Are all outings perfect...no. Do kids do kid things that are wrong...yes.
Humans are not perfect, especially 10-18 yr olds.
And how many times have folks on here complained about poor hunter activity/etiquette? Should we stop hunting?
While not for all, Scouting is based on much that is preached on this forum. I truly do not understand the animosity towards a construct that is pro outdoors, God, charity, kindness, and leadership.
Please take the politics out of the situation and look at the high level benefits of what youngsters could be learning.

And that is a shame. But I bet you got through to more than one and they found what you were doing interesting and paid attention.I don't have any reason to interact with boyscout leaders. It's not my choice to mentor them.
And for your information, over the years, I have done countless demonstrations and classes for boy scouts. Flintknapping, arrow making, hide tanning, friction fire starting, etc. Most of those times, I have felt like they didn't learn a thing, because there are 20 kids laughing and carousing with each other, not paying the first lick of attention or interest to what I said, they were worried about impressing each other. And their "leaders" didn't seem to encourage them to pay attention. So, you go do it. I've given my pound of flesh.
Some troops do teach and enforce those things. Scouting, while a national organization, is mostly driven at the local level.If they actually taught and enforced those things, it would be good. They did in the 50s. Now, it's just another group of unruly kids ignoring their "leaders."
