Rimfire Steel Challenge

Anyone shoot the steel challenge at Riverbend? I’m interested in trying it out. I’ve caught the rimfire bug and this seems like a lot of fun. Do they run all 8 stages or just 6 and how large of a crowd does it usually draw?

The Steel Challenge match at River Bend is popular enough that most months one needs to sign up ahead of time on Practiscore to secure a spot. It's a fun and well run match and it is sanctioned by SCSA. As it happens, I've won my rimfire category there a couple of times.

This is the link to the Practiscore page where you can see results from past matches and where you should be able to find the sign up for the next match in a week or two:

On the same day (second Sunday each month, Feb 9 is the next one), there is also an unsanctioned Steel Challenge match at Cherokee Gun Club in Gainesville. It tends to be a smaller match and it also lets you shoot multiple guns (RBGC only allows one). You don't need to sign up for this one in advance. It is very friendly and very well organized. I prefer this match, since it is a shorter drive for me, it starts after church, and some family members like to shoot two guns. The organizers here go out of their way to make ladies, children, and first timers welcome. Scores are posted to Practiscore.

On the third Saturday each month (next on Feb 15) there is an unsanctioned 22 Steel Challenge match at Cherokee Gun Club. This discipline is a bit different from SCSA since you can only shoot 22s, the stages are not standardized, and you need to shoot both a 22 pistol and a 22 rifle at each stage. It's a lot of fun, and the organizers are very welcoming to women, children, and new shooters. There are only 4 stages, but it feels like 8 since you shoot both rifle and pistol. Results are posted to Practiscore. This is one of my favorite events each month.

I expect to attend both events at Cherokee next month. If you'd like to attend either one, send me a PM and I'll make sure all your questions are answered and welcome you personally on the event day. If you attend the event at RBGC, I can make sure all your questions are answered and help you be sure to find the needed link to sign up in advance before the match is full.

Don't worry too much about winning your first match. Try and make sure you bring the right equipment and that you focus on being safe and having fun. If you do that, I expect you will improve rapidly and be competitive after a few matches if you want to be.

Thanks. Didn’t know about the ones at Cherokee. The rim fire is really the one I’m interested in. I’ll have to see what my schedule allows. Work and daughters volleyball tends to eat up a lot of time.
