Things only Boy Scouts and Hunters Take Seriously

Redundancy. Like for when your phone compass flakes out at the same time your headlamp takes a dump too. Especially in pitch black thick pines while retrieving a camera that is not picking up any activity.

Backup small flashlight and old regular magnetic needle compass (and learning to use it in Orienteering Merit Badge) came in super handy tonight. Off to Walmart for a new headlamp as new batteries are not solving the problem either.

Two is one and one is none.

I lost my trail on my own property one day going in the dark for the morning hunt.

I pulled out my magnetic compass and took a bearing in the direction I thought I needed to go from a combination of dead reckoning and knowing my own property well enough.

Brought me straight as an arrow to my stand.
