Thoughts on Towing a small trailer long distances ~

Not nearly as far but I've pulled a small trailer to Illinois several times. Did fine. The tires in my case didn't last very long. Partly i think because they bounce around since they are light. Didnt wear the tread down so much. Mine would end up with little chunks missing. Like @Milkman said spares. Personally I'd take 4. Reason being if there's some kind of road hazard you could lose 2 right off. But that's just me. Good luck.
