I listened to a good bit of sports talk radio yesterday and the consensus seems to be that Tennessee ought to be ashamed of itself for the debacle at the end of the Ole Miss Game. I don't disagree but UT ain't alone in their behavior....it can happen anywhere. In fact it or something similar used to happen fairly regularly.

In 1933 a band of miscreants from Red Stick Louisiana invaded the classic city, 2000+ strong, and proceeded to act as such lo-bred ruffians will and beat the Dawgs 13-0 despite the warm and gentile welcome they had received upon arrival in Athens. At the final whistle 1200 cadets from the Louisiana state prison in Baton Rouge, aptly named Louisiana State University, stormed the field and attempted to tear down the spanking new steel goal posts only recently installed in both end zones. Needless to say the more refined gentlemen of the land grant university of the empire state of the south took umbrage to the temerity of the Frenchmen and defended the goal posts...eventually chasing the unruly and no doubt unwashed Cajuns from the hallowed grounds to the train station on College Avenue, stopping momentarily at a nearby construction site to grab sticks of lumber to assist in persuading the folks from Baja Arkansas to cease and desist their assault on the goal posts in Athens. Upon arrival back in Atlanta the LSU cadets were treated for multiple head wounds and claimed the Georgia faithful had used knives against them in the assault.,,,a testament to the self control exercised by the UGA crowd to use knives and not simply shoot the scoundrels on the spot....

This event inspired an addition to the top of the scoreboard at Sanford Stadium which survived until the mid 1970's when seats were added and the old scoreboard was replaced. Atop the old scoreboard was a Dawg, dressed in UGA gear, clutching a 2 X 4 with a nail protruding from the top. Not only did LSU and UGA fans more or less riot in the streets of Athens after the game in 1933 the University of Georgia erected and kept a iconic reminder of that event in public view inside Sanford Stadium as a reminder to visitors from such backward locales as Tuscaloosa, Knoxville, Auburn and North Avenue that they were invited guests among gentlemen and would be well advised to deport themselves as such while in Athens less they find themselves knocked up side the head with a 2X4!
