Friday: Went to a different piece of public

Saturday: I setup within 50 yards of his roost tree without knowing it until daybreak. He gobbled really good, his hens pitched to me and he flew at least a half a mile the opposite direction ?

Sunday: Planned to hunt before 9:30 church service…Got setup in the same general area all under his hens..

He finally gobbled at daylight what seemed to be 400 yards away.

I make a big loop around to what I thought was about half way to him…nothing. As I’m about to pack it up and head to the truck he gobbled about 200ish yards away on a big ridge.

I move to that ridge and get above him and he’s with all his hens.

I sat there for about an hour…he wasn’t worried about me and his hens weren’t coming to me…I just listened to them scratching, walking, yelping, and an occasional gobble.

He finally gobbles back toward my initial starting point…

9:20ish I make another big loop to get out in front of him…I get on the ridge and hear him walking then lookup and see him on the ridge across from me…headed my direction.

9:50ish I make a few soft yelps as he disappears into the creek bottom below me….a few minutes later I hear walking and drumming…

10:00AM his fan pops up coming right at me about 20 yards away…

The rest is history!

I missed church but I was sitting on top of the rock in the picture when I shot the bird…a cross (maybe someone’s buried pet or something)…either way, I’m saying the Man upstairs called this one in for me.
