Vintage Hewning Hatchets

Come across these cleaning out my dad’s barn. He got them back in the 90’s from a friend that was 96 yo. All he said was that they’re very old.
The smaller one is a True Temper Flint Edge.
Can’t make out a name on the larger one.

I’ve got new handles on the way. Gonna restore both.

When I found mine in the barn, it didn't have a handle, so I made one from a chunk of old ash bowsatave.

Cleaned them up a bit today. Found a name on the bigger one.
D.Simmons. Researched it a bit and found they were made between 1830-1860! Made In Cohoe NY.
Had no idea what I had. It’s in great shape to be pre civil war.

I have no idea about this one. No markings. Neighbor up in the hills made/refurbished it for me knowing I love to head out into the hills for a few days at a time. He made the sheath and strap. It's 19" total and I havent gotten around to using it yet. He also forges all sorts of things but I love it and cant wait to use it. Three weeks and counting.

He makes pistol holsters too and he is pretty durn good at it.

Got them finished up.
Decided to leave the patina on them. They would look good polished but I like them as is.
