Get ones that operate in the VHF range as opposed to the UHF range. Most of the Cobras, Midland, all the FRS type radios operate in the 400+ mhz (UHF) range. I can't remember all the reasons why VHF is better than UHF, but having tried half a dozen of those FRS radios, I eventually settled on marine radios which are VHF. They are not as compact as FRS types, but I my dad and I can talk from one side of the hunting property to the other with no problems (about 2 miles).
