Why do the experts bother with adding the 1/2 to deer age ?

I know when someone says a deer is 3 1/2 they are doing so due to the spring birth.

But why bother ?? 3 years old is close enough isn’t it?

Oh, I’m 68 1/2 since I was born in the spring and it’s fall now.

53.75 here

They do the same with bears here when you send a tooth in to the DNR

Guess they try to be as close as possible to account for life span

Beats me. But if I had to guess it would be because folks seem to always ask "age this deer please?" right before or during hunting season, which as you said is about 6 moths after birthing season.

Their are deer in Alabama that truly are just over 3 months old.

Here’s another preponderance…why do we harvest deer but slaughter cattle?

Never heard of a beef processing facility refer to “harvesting” cattle. They prefer “slaughter”.

On 2nd thought…that seems appropriate. They are slaughtered.

Pretty sure we receive harvest tags for deer rather than kill tags. Either way their kilt.

i think slaughter carries the connotation of killing in large numbers.

I don't say "harvest" myself. Sounds too much like somebody trying to appease the sensitive PETA crowd.

I say "kill". It's a wild animal, not a bunch of row crops.

The .5 isn’t offensive to me, but I prefer the description in racks. 1st rack, second, third, etc. It works from the .25 mark to about the .75 mark in years.

It’s a little annoying when someone is asking for a buck age in July and people are saying “3.5” when 3.05 is likely closer.
