Anybody know of a good choke for the Mossberg 500a? My buddy will be turkey hunting with me for his first time this season and we need to find a good choke for him. He's not lookin to spend a load of money on one, but if that's what it takes, he'll do it!

Thanks

660 to 665. That should fix you up. You have a few to pick from.

Gone But Not Forgotten
Saw some at bass pro friday. H.s. Strut should work ok. I found out the 500 has a different size barrel than a 835. So be carful in selection.

I'd spend the money and get a good one... Pay me now or pay me later...

If he wants to shoot lead(win hv) I'd go kicks gt .665
If he wants to shoot HTL then I'd prob go with a jelly head from primos

It depends on what load. Here's some actual Mossberg 500 combos (commercial shells) with 40 yd/10" numbers that may give him some idea:

Carlson 670/Nitros 7s (1 7/8oz): 282
Carlson 670/Nitros 4x5x7 (1 7/8oz): 193
Carlson 670/Winchester HD 6s (1 3/4oz): 171
Carlson 670/Federal Heavyweight 7s (1 5/8oz): 115
Carlson 670/Hevi-13 6s (1 3/4oz): 108
Carlson 670/Remington Prem. 6s (1 3/4oz) : 91
Carlson 670/Winchester Supreme 5s (2 oz) : 60

Wrights 675/Nitros 7s: 292
Wrights 675/Nitros 4x5x7: 187
Wrights 675/Hevi-13 6s: 152
Wrights 675/Federal Heavyweight 7s : 141
Wrights 675/Winchester HD 6s: 102
Wrights 675/Winchester Supreme 5s: 79
Wrights 675/Remington Prem. 6s: 65

Jellyhead 660/Nitros 7s: 166
Jellyhead 660/Federal Heavyweight 7s : 137
Jellyhead 660/Winchester HD 6s: 126
Jellyhead 660/Winchester Supreme 5s: 117
Jellyhead 660/Nitros 4x5x7: 98
Jellyhead 660/Remington Prem. 6s: 91
Jellyhead 660/Hevi-13 6s: 64

(Of course, by far the best combo will be with handloaded TSS shells, which aren't included here)

I have a Star Dot in my 500A. It and Federal Heavyweight #7's have killed numerous birds for me the last several years. Patterns are very tight and consistent.

Primos tight wad

I have an old Mossberg 500 with a24" barrel that I shoot the mag blend load through a Primos Tight Wad choke. I've not done the number count but I can assure you it is a deadly combo. This is my back up gun, I usually carry a Rem 11-87 shooting Fed #7 Heavy weight through a Primos TightWad choke getting an average of 175 pellets Ina 10" circle at 40 yards. The pattern is smooth with hardly any holes. I've not counted the shot with the Moss but it produces a smooth pattern also with the blend load.
This choke is inexpensive and has served mme well the last few years.
Good luck to you and your friend, hopefully each of you will kill a Boss Tom.

Here is my pattern a week ago with my 500a. I was shooting the Hevi 13 magnum blend @ 45yds w/ the Jelly Head .660. #124 in the 10. Hope this helps
