Button Buck with large growth

I was told it is Goiter. They get it when the soil doesn't have enough nutrients. Does anybody know if it's painful or should I just let it go or does he need to come out of the food chain. It may be hard but can anybody guess his age?

Goiter is not unusual and is usually just a relative iodine deficiency in rapidly growing ruminants such as deer or goats, causing enlargement of the thyroid. Typically self-limiting.
This is a little low, and big, to be a goiter.

If he is a button buck, you already know his age. No guessing involved.

Goiter is enlargement of the thyroid glands, which are found on either side of the larynx.
I would go with an abscess as a more likely scenario.

It looks like there's a scar behind his shoulder in the second picture. Could be someone stuck him with an arrow that ended up above his brisket and didn't quite exit. If so the mass would be a giant hematoma. Just a thought.
