Grill rust question

Question for the pros

I was watching Man -Fire - Food on the television and he was at a guys place doing a spit whole hog. They threw the pig on a super rusty expanded metal lower and tied a rusty top grid to keep it over the fire.

I am always concerned about grate rust ......am I over reacting?

Just adds a little iron to your diet. You probably need it.

Burn it and brush it. No biggie.

Yup....I love stainless grates that I can do high temp burn-offs with.

Kill it with fire.

Found out recently during a high temp burn-off on my 24" ceramic kamado.....with every grate from my kettles, WSM & etc in there......that.....the Weber grates aren't stainless. Some type of plated stuff. GRRRRRRR.

That's what I do. I was just surprised they put those super rusty expanded metal grates around the pig cold and no brush.
My rule is just heat it, brush it and spray some oil on it to knock down the rust powder and grill away.:flag:

I like that show but sometimes they show folks doing things that make me shake my head.

They must have been cooking for someone other than themselves, facepalm: I also would brush, burn then grill
