New .308

I've been looking at getting a .308 and have a question for the "GUN GUYS". I have looked at several brands, Browning, Tikka, T/C etc....
There are several different rates of twist, some 1:10, 1:11 and 1:12. Which is best for hunting with either 150 or 165 grain bullets? Does it matter?

A 10, 11, or 12 will all work fine. The 10 twist comes in handy when you start shooting bullea longer than the 175's.

I have a .308 Remington model 700 that I've had some work done too and I shoot 168 g bullets it's a fine shooting machine at 500 yds. I don't think you can go wrong with that caliber.

I've got an older Rem 700 varmint synthetic in .308, its 1 in12 twist, shoots 150gr loads the best, sub moa groups out to 500yds, I know a 1 in 10 is best for 168gr or heavier, I would imagine the 1 in 11 would be a good compromise, but I didn't even realize anyone made that twist rate?

Just to add, have a buddy with an AR chambered in .308, 1 in 10 twist rate, he started out trying to use 150gr btsp loads, couldn't get a decent group, ended up going with 168gr loads, groups calmed down, consistently 1in to 1 1/4 inch groups, I think the 1 in 10 twist spins the 150's too fast to get consistent groups.

This is my first one I consider when going deer hunting. It is a Browning BAR Safari.

I'd stick with 1:10 or 1:11. If you end up using any mono metal projectiles that are anything north of 160gr or so they will have about the same length as 180gr C&Cs. 1:10 would be very helpful when using 168-180gr monos.

It really doesn't make any difference in a hunting rifle shooting common bullet weights. Anything in the 150gr-180gr range will do fine out of a 10, 11, 11.25, 12, etc.....

I think Remignton uses 10 as their standard now. My 700 (2016 production) in 308 shoots 155's, 168's, and 178's just fine.

I think most production .308's use the 1 in 10 twist now, unless the rifle is designated a varmint model, then it likely will be the 12 twist, as stated above, for hunting at normal ranges any combination will be acceptable, its only when you are trying for accuracy down in the 1inch or less moa that it starts to matter. Also for reloaders , when you load the lighter projectiles, (150gr or less) up at the upper limits of specs, then the 12 twist is really needed.

Last .308 Win I owned had a lightweight barrel contour in 20" with a 1-in10" twist.

It loved the 165gr Nosler BT handholds I ran in and it also shot the Remington CoreLokt 150gr loads I'd buy at Walmart. It was uncanny how tight that gun would group those rounds.

choices of .308 rifles

Look at the Ruger M77 Hawkeye All weather rifle. Has been made in most all calibers. Has a very substantial black synthetic stock , Brushed stainless finish metal , great mauser bolt action . Mine is in .308 has a 1 in 10 twist rate. model 07123.
