I also use a rangefinder for ranging my 40 yard and inside distance as well as using it for a monocular instead of carrying a set of binoculars. Works for me.

In most instances I just use a 22 hornet or 22/250

Sometimes carry a rangefinder now that I am getting a bit older and especially if I take a kid. Years ago, I shot a lot of bow tournaments and you learn to judge yardage pretty good after a while. I would recommend for you guys that hunt in fields and you can do this in woods as well.....but break it down into 10 and even 5 yd increments starting in front of you and go from there. Used to do this in yard and any new place. You'd b surprised with a little practice you can get it down to being accurate with you guest Imation at +/- 1/2yds

For me and my vision, and as others have said when I perceive he’s in range and I can see that eyeball clearly he’ll be just over 40 yards.
