Georgia Creel Survey

SOCIAL CIRCLE, GA--The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is asking anglers who fish the Chattahoochee River between Morgan Falls Dam and the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area's Paces Mill Park to participate in an creel survey that will assist DNR fisheries biologists in evaluating trout management on this section of the river. The survey began on April 3 and continues through September 2006.
Anglers will be interviewed by a creel clerk as they leave the river who will inquire about how anglers fished, how long they fished, the species they fished for and how many fish they caught. The clerk could also ask to weigh and measure any or all fish anglers harvest. The DNR says it typically conducts one to three creel surveys on various waterways in the state each year.

In other Georgia trout fishing news, state biologists have announced that they plan to stop stocking browns in the Chattahoochee between Buford Dam and Chattahoochee River Park for the next three to five years. The state wants to better determine how much of the existing population originates from stocking efforts and how much is due to natural reproduction.
The DNR says it will still stock 150,000 trout, but they'll all be rainbow trout. The DNR will monitor the brown trout population in the Chattahoochee during this three- to five-year study period. If the study concludes that stocking is required to maintain a quality brown trout fishery, the DNR says it will resume stocking.
