Ground Cover

I am clearing some of our land as this weather allows. I need a ground cover to put out in the freshly turned dirt. Any recommendations of seed or techniques would be great.

I am trying to get a jump on this project and prefer not to wait March or April to get started.

Again the sole purpose is ground cover not to benefit anything other than preventing erosion.

Cereal rye would be cheap and effective
