I am sanding down a couple gun stocks. not sure of the type wood but think they are walnut. have a stain called jacobean that is sorta dark. what do I do to preserve the wood. tung oil prolly will not work. need something to keep out rain/moisture.

do I put the water repel on first or after I stain? don't want a shiny look--that's what I am trying to get rid of on one. Thanks for any help.

if you want to waterproof stocks then use polyurethane spray finish. Stain the wood first if it too light in color for your taste. BB

Truoil works great. I've also used the spray polyurethan from helmsman before as well with good results.

Truoil and poly will both work but you might need to hit it with a little steel wool to knock down the shine.

I prefer a hand rubbed oil finish like Tung Oil or Watco Danish Oil when rubbed in it will do a good job of protecting the wood plus repairing a scratch is simply rubbing in a little more oil.
