Habitat?????

Hey everyone, Before I purchased land. Food plots, feeders, and mineral licks were my idea of "habitat." That's because you can only invest into a lease but so much. Today, it's control burns, thinning, native trees, pollinators, native grasses, etc. I still do some food plots and feeders. Honestly, they produce opportunity for kids or adults to fill the freezer. The long game of habitat improvement is way more productive for game and non game species. It also doesn't require killing the soil and constant fertilizer and herbicides. I'm not talking about site prep work. I'm talking about tilling plots year after year. It seems many hunters are moving away from things like soil disturbance and fertilizer.

Should there be a habitat improvement page in the GON forum that focuses on no till, control burns, thinning, natives, duck boxes, pollinators. Native plants, etc???

It seems to me that the future of game animals will rely heavily upon the habitat that is left undeveloped. Making that habitat the best that it can be is vital. Would these conversations be part of the food plot group or the quail group? Habitat seems like a different topic to me. Am I the only one who has taken a massive interest in this direction of land improvements for game? Many of the experts that I learn from have a passion for hunting and fishing. It seems a majority of the habitat improvement people are very much concerned about good land improvement practices that benifit game species.

GON is the largest hunting forum in the state. I have been a member for atleast 20 years. What is holding this transition in game management back? Is it the seed, corn, and supplement providers? Can we not have both worlds? Habitat and food plots??? This is a serious question. The largest hunting forum in the state should promote game habitat with the same passion of creating food plots and bait stations. Thousands of sportsman want to discuss these habitat projects with others. They also come from a game focused background of food plots and mineral licks. We are forced to discuss these topics in other groups. For example, the topic of control burns. Does that fall under deer hunting? Quail hunting,? Turkey hunting? Or food plots? Fire is vital to all of these species. I guess it belongs here in the campfire group? The states smallest control burn! Some of these outside groups have members that are totally ignorant to the importance of managing game populations through hunting. Us habitat folks just want to stay at home with our GON friends.

Thanks for reading! Time to go hunting! Suns coming up. Gotta go check the roost. Happy hunting everyone.

There are countless threads in the food plot / gardens section on all these topics. I have borrowed quite a bit from there at times. Many different persepectives in there from large ag full time farmers to a food plot behind the house.
