I’ve had good success with winter rye and crimson clover.

Depends on what you’re wanting out of it.
Crimson clover would do well and putout some free nitrogen when it dies.
Awnless wheat will provide feed now and seed heads for critters in early summer.

Or mix the two. A good combination plot that will provide food and nitrogen.

Well I will replant sunflowers in May of 2024. Just wanted a cover crop to minimize weeds and provide some spring food as well. I planted wheat and crimson clover on Saturday before the rain hit.

Wheat. Let it head out. Mow it in the spring and harrow in. Help build up the soil.

Another fan of wheat, cereal rye and some crimson clover. Good winter cover crop combo.

It should make a good crop and you are smart keeping something growing.
