Large Turtle

Got this picture of a large snapping turtle on a beaver crossing. Picture does this no justice. He is huge.

Yes, I have seen several in there but none that big. I’m thinking about going to stand by that log this weekend and get a picture of me for comparison.

I’d say more than than knowing how big the log is that he’s next to.

That`s no regular snapper, that`s an alligator snapping turtle. And they do get big. Real big.

He will take a whole limb off if not careful.

Back in the 60’s my kin folk would set limb lines on the Tennessee River bank and catch them. It would be a weekend affair to cook them up. They would first let us kids get around them to see their speed and attitude. They will hiss like crazy. They can bite a broom handle into. That’s why you guys that go grabling can have it.

When i was a lad growing up in the U.P. , my dad caught a Northern Snapping turtle crossing the road by a pond. He threw it in the trunk of our 62 Ford Falcon and took it to an old widow lady that lived on a farm by herself. When we arrived and he opened the trunk that snapper had bit clean through the spare tire and tore up all kinds of stuff in the trunk. The old widow lady was happy to get the turtle though.
