Learning to turn wood

Spent the past week at the John C. Campbell Folk School learning to turn wood.
The instructor was Jim Bliss and Don was there assisting.
The lathe was a Powermatic 3520C with all the attachments and various chisels.

Never turn wood until attending this class.
Learn to make spindles, bowls, boxes and kaleidoscopes.
Jim is a great instructor. He can hear when someone is doing something wrong. Don was always around and sharpening chisels for us.

Before photo of the boxes.

After photo of the boxes. The wood is maple.

The chip on the second box came from me dropping the box, not from a wild gouge with the chisel.

Now, looking for a lathe.
Enjoy.

Looks great, was it Don Marks that was assisting. He is great guy and a very good turner as well. I use to be in a local club with him.
flyrod,
yes I believe that is Don's last name. Don stated he lives in North Carolina about 60 miles from the folk school.
Don was tell me about his latest bowl. 19 inches in diameter and 12 inches deep. Wish i could have seen the bowl.

He lives in Franklin. That would be a big bowl for sure, I turned a 22" chip and dip platter one time wouldn't want to try and hollow out any thing that big.

Nice. I quit turning wood about 19 years ago, but I still turn stone.

I’m jealous, I’ve been tinkering with woodworking for years but I’ve yet to tackle wood turning. It’s on my list for sure. Great job on the boxes.
