Megapillar!!!

Found this guy on a buddies leg this weekend at deer camp. He was easily 5"+ long and at least as big around as my thumb! My first thought was luna moth but after Googling it, I don't think so. It was far & away the largest caterpillar I've ever seen. What is it?

I've surely never seen one. Thanks for the photos and the google information because it is nice to know that this big "devil" is totally harmless too. It is an awesome looking critter.

Funny but at the time he looked much too dangerous to handle. We just used a stick to put him on our fig tree and sent him on his merry way.
