Paddleboats, black water, and bream

Had an enjoyable Sunday morning fishing a black water tidal river in the lowcountry with Floyd. I've posted photos over the years of his remarkable bird carvings and our woodcock exploits. Here's a paddleboat he made based on the late Billy Bishop Ogeechee River paddleboat, but this one is longer with modifications by Floyd. Floyd also made the paddles. There had been heavy rains over the week, but the short run of a river resisted severe staining better than the larger rivers and while fishing wasn't great, we felt a few tugs on the fly. I fished my daughter's rod, a starter kit from Echo, four piece 5 wgt. It's a fine rod for beginners and for all skill levels at a low price. We released all bass, smaller bream and kept a deeply hooked warmouth and a few big bream for the pan. This is a great boat to fish out of and it paddles against the current easily. Perspective makes the bigger end look larger than midships, but it isn't, as the gunnels curve inward at both ends.

Below are the photos evidencing "you should've been here Friday before last when it hadn't rained.." All but a couple were released in fine shape from his livewell. The bass were caught in the same stretch we fished. He emptied the well and filled it back up. All on poppers.

Here's the old master boat builder, Billy Bishop, depicted in Jack Leigh's great book, The Ogeechee, a River and It's People (Wormsloe Foundation 1986):

Sounds like a great trip. Would love to see the pics, but they’re not working for me.

Gil,

Looks life a fun trip. I really like that boat. Do you know about how long it is? How about approximate weight?
