I voted no due to NIMBY rules. I like the freedom of people to smoke weed and gamble, but with the understanding, when you wreck your life over a bet or blow your money getting high, don’t ask me to pay more taxes to bail out your family.

Due away with able body welfare and I will vote heck yeah on everything.

Yes. Hopefully it will slow the growth in my area a little and give harrahs some competition AWAY from here.

This is all you need to know so repeat after me please.

When it comes to betting, the House always wins in the end.

The vast majority of the poor and middle class who participate in this will get poorer. The vast majority of the rich who invest in this will get richer.

So, learn from the rich and don't participate but do invest and you'll come out ahead.

It’s personal responsibility, no one is forcing them to gamble. I figure casinos and racetrack betting are just another way to pay volunteer taxes. I don’t play so I don’t pay. As long as the money is spent on something worthwhile then let them continue paying it.
It’s that simple.

I wish things were that simple, but like many things, it's the unintended consequences that end up costing us.

The way this is written up, 80% would go towards education with an emphasis on Georgia's pre-k program, 15% would go towards an education program on problem gambling, and the final 5% will promote major sporting events in Georgia.

Just as the lottery has caused grade inflation in the high schools of Georgia and the cost of a college education to go up far faster and higher than the rate of inflation, this program will have unintended costs that will affect Georgian's too. I don't know what they'll be, but it will, you can be sure of that.

These costs are coming no matter what. If someone wants to fund it voluntarily, whether it’s 100% or 80% or 50%, that’s still better than us non gamblers funding it 100%.

I fail to see how costs come if you don't bring something into the state.
But, this will pass and we'll have to fund an extra something because of this. Whether it's higher taxes to support the working poor who spend money they should be using to pay living expenses on gambling instead or higher local taxes to fund a local casino that got a tax break, it will not be a positive for the middle class just as the lottery hasn't been a positive for the middle class.
The cost of living is high enough as it is and now we're bringing in something that folks will waste money on and need extra services from the government because of it. Just makes no sense to me.

One last thing:
Sen. Harold Jones, an Augusta Democrat, said the state's projected $100 million collected annually in sports betting revenue is likely a conservative estimate.

State gambling money is like a hidden tax. Every dollar it collects came from someone's pocket. The 100 million plus a year will mainly come from Georgia residents who will spend that money and most will lose. That means that 100 million dollars of Georgia resident's money won't be spent on other businesses that employ Georgians and pay taxes.

Like @Whitefeather said. Those Georgians are already spending that money on gambling but they're having to travel to other states to spend it and those states are the ones benefitting from those Georgia residents.

No, I don't think that many Georgians are spending 100 million on gambling a year in addition to the state lottery.

Don't get me wrong. We could legalize every vice there is out there. Drugs, gambling, and prostitution could all be legalized and we'd have very little problem with it except for one thing. The federal and state government won't enforce the laws on the books and won't make people live with the bad decisions they make so they make the rest of us pay extra taxes to take care of and clean up after these people or they do like California, Oregon, and Washington and do nothing at all and let society degrade into a world of poop covered sidewalks and rampant shoplifting.

The latter will happen before government makes people live with the consequences of their bad decisions.

I don't go to casinos, I know better than to throw away my money. The state's lottery system has taught me the error of my ways.
We should accept this proposal only if it lowers our personal taxes. That should be an amendment. Our real-estate taxes should be reduced at a minimum of 90%. I would understand a 90% decrease in our real-estate tax, if they could make up the difference in a user tax. Actually, this new casino should eliminate all of my personal properties tax. Just think of all the billions the state would benefit from casinos.
Yeah, I'll vote for it, if they eliminate my forced taxation.

Man, I do so wish for this. But, the state never rewards the responsible and punishes the foolish. The foolish are the dependent ones so their votes are easily purchased.
