Took my oldest on his first turkey hunt this morning. This was his first trip to public land too. He’s been deer hunting on our private with me many times, but an elevated deer stand it a bit different than the bottom of a tree with eagle eyed turkeys and no blind. I’ve been waiting for him to get to the point where he can keep up in the woods run and gunning. Still a lot to learn, but he stuck with me like a champ from daylight to 11am. We covered about two miles, and did three blind setups on a ridge and creek bottom covered with scratch. Unfortunately the turkeys were silent and invisible so today was more of a nature walk but he made friends with a snail for about an hour, checked out every hole and burrow we came across, learned about aging scratch/scouting for birds and we started an intro course on how to walk through the woods quietly enough to hear what’s going on around us. Boy has some sharp ears. He was pointing out distant crows and woodpeckers I couldn’t even hear. This kid is gonna be a real asset once I get his ears tuned to a distant gobble.
