White Oak acorns - planting

Seeing the other thread on here about acorns got me curious. I have a lot (few hundred), white oak acorns my daughters collected when we were in the N Ga mountains a few weeks ago. The acorns were on the ground and had started sprouting a tap root. We collected them and planted them in small styrofoam cups with potting soil. I have not noticed anything sprouting out of the top yet. Is there anything I should do to prepare them for the upcoming winter/freezing weather? Or leave them be?

I would protect them somewhat, at least. Mulch o something around the cups so they're not exposed. And, speaking from experience, you'd better have them fixed so that squirrels can't get them.
