It all started with the dream of a grand slam of turkeys. It’s a passion, it’s my obsession. After completing one slam and doing a single season slam next, I told my wife we need to go for the royal slam. We headed south to chihuahua and had one of the best hunts you can possibly have. Well, we’ve came this far, we might as well go ahead and finish with the ocellated.
This week, I did just that. El halcon outfitters has the best accommodations you can ask for and has his hunts/camps dialed in perfectly. Manuel will not and doesn’t disappoint. I killed within the first 2 hours after arriving to camp on Monday afternoon in the last few minutes of daylight. That was my one and only regret (which isn’t really regret). Next time, I will wait for a morning hunt. Nothing is guaranteed when hunting so nothing taken for granted here.
Overall, we had a great group and all tagged out some some fantastic ocellated birds. I got to hear a lot of singing as he came in and that made the hunt. I also went with another gentleman one morning to video his hunt and we had a great hunt with a little cell phone video of the hunt as a bonus
The only thing different with this hunt vs all the other hunts I’ve done…I went solo. My wife wasn’t able to accompany me. Being very pregnant at this point, it wasn’t smart for her to make this trip. We will return in 2025 to get hers slam complete and I’ll try for another as well.
Anyone looking to do a Goulds or ocellated, have no doubts contacting el halcon/Manuel. He will take care of you every step of the way and he has been very good to us and even has to reschedule this ocellated hunt once and now rescheduled my wife for a second time. He is second to none with his outfit.
